How to Dry Flowers

You’ve done all the steps to care for your beautiful bouquet, and now the time has come to take the next step. Rather than watch your flowers wilt,

a touching way to preserve your flowers is to dry them! Flower drying has been used for ages to keep flowers,

and it allows the memory to live with them as well. Listed below are few different methods and tips to make sure you get the most out of

your flowers.

Air Dry

  1. Remove excess petals, cut stems, and remove flowers from sunlight.
  2. Hang flowers (use a rubber band, twine, or unflavored floss to tie them to a stick or hanger).
  3. Leave flowers to dry in a dark, dry area for 2 to 3 weeks.

Tip: once dry, spray with unscented hairspray for added protection.

Microwave

Note:  this type requires silica gel.  Also, do not use a dish you want to use for food consumption again after this project.

  1. Cover the bottom of your microwave-safe container with silica gel. Place flowers blossom side up in the gel, and pour more gel overtop.
  2. Microwave uncovered for 2-5 minutes and add time in 30 second intervals as needed.
  3. Once dried, open microwave and immediately cover the container.
  4. Finish by cleaning the gel with a brush and mist them with an acrylic spray.

Tip: this method takes quite a bit of trial and error.

With all the above, it’s best to dry them early. If you received a special bouquet for an anniversary or graduation, make sure to dry them before they start to wilt.
