The History of Sweetest Day

Cursive lettering that spells out Happy Sweetest Day with a bunch of cut out hearts below itWe’re only a few weeks away from celebrating Sweetest Day once again. While its often thought of as a prelude to Valentine’s Day, Sweetest Day has its own unique story and significance that makes it a special day in its own right. Let’s dive into the history of this holiday and take a closer look at why it continues to be celebrated by many:

The Origins of Sweetest Day

Sweetest Day was first celebrated in 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio. The idea is said to have originated from a philanthropic candy company employee by the name of Herbert Birch Kingston, who wanted to bring some joy into the lives of orphans, shut-ins, underprivileged, and others who needed it. He decided to distribute candy and small gifts with the help of friends and family. This was meant to convey the message of taking a moment to be kind to others and recognize those who felt forgotten.

The Evolution of the Day

Sweetest Day has evolved significantly over the century since its founding. While it started off initially as a day of giving, it has gradually become more commercialized and viewed as a romantic holiday. Today, it’s celebrated mostly in the Great Lakes region and parts of the Northeast. But it’s an opportunity for people around the country to show appreciation for the sweethearts and loved ones in their lives, often exchanging flowers and cards.

Celebrating Sweetest Day Today

Sweetest Day is typically celebrated on the third Saturday of October. Unlike the more globally recognized Valentine’s Day, Sweetest Day provides an opportunity to express love and gratitude on a more personal level during the fall season. It’s sort of a precursor to the festivities of November and December. This day encourages everyone to spread kindness and appreciation in their own way, whether it’s through a thoughtful note, a sweet treat, or a beautiful bouquet.

As Sweetest Day approaches, consider celebrating this delightful tradition by showing those close to you just how much they mean.
